"With the 2010 census less than a year away, officials have launched a
campaign to build trust with undocumented immigrants amid growing concern that millions of people in the country illegally will be afraid to be counted."
There's that phrase again: "undocumented immigrants." The Republic again refuses to address the fact that the immigrants who clandestinely cross United States borders do so illegally - period! They have the chance to be "documented" if they go through the necessary procedure - in their home country.
This article continues siding with the illegal immigrants - they will be afraid to come out of hiding to be counted amongst all of the legal U.S. citizens (like they are afraid to collect their Social Security funds). Many illegal immigrants aren't afraid to do a number of things - for example, stand out in plain sight in front of a Home Depot, hoping to find a day's work; commit violent crimes in the cities they pass through; give birth in the United States so that their children will never lose their 21st century benefits as United States citizens; collect welfare and health care until their heart is content.
Finally, Mr. Gonzalez puts the onus squarely on the federal officials to build trust with the illegal immigrants. Trust? Now there's one I haven't heard in this illegal immigration debate. How about the Washington politicians start augmenting the trust of their constituents - their legal constituents? How about the federal officials begin to throw 100% support behind Sheriff Arpaio's efforts to arrest any illegal immigrant he can find and to encourage more law enforcement agencies to do the same?
To whom do the government and the news media services allegiances lie - the citizens of this country, or the citizens of other countries? The Arizona Republic proved again that it still grovels at the doorstep of other countries.
